| All you do is twist. Twist it counter-clockwise to undo it and twist it clockwise to tighten it up. | |

| It's the same thing. The gear shift knob has nothing to do with it's transmission. | |

| I think Carmen is saying that all you have to do is twist the knob off, whether it be manual or auto. All you have to buy is a knob with the button and twist. | |

Most newer automatic cars just don't have the gears in a straight line and therefore you have no buttons and you can just twist it off. If you have a button, you just remove the screw which usually undoes the button and therefore you can twist it off. I just forgot that the FD had a button since the picture OP posted was a manual and said that it was the type of gear knob he wanted.

| the FD civic auto must have a button simply to get in reverse otherwise what would happen if u suddenly push it into R while your driving??? Your mx5 may not have a button but unfortunately that does not apply to all autos | |

otherwise what would happen if u suddenly push it into R while your driving??? Your mx5 may not have a button but unfortunately that does not apply to all autos Car's that don't have buttons to go into reverse [if the gears are in a straight line] need you to be at a stop and standing on the brakes to get into R. I understand that some cars with gear selection in a straight line require a button most of the time, but I'm saying that most newer autos no longer have their gear selection in a straight configuration therefore don't need a button. Even so, the basics of what I was saying is that it is pretty much a twist off.

This Thread is useless, unless there are pics It's not an argument. I was just explaining how not all auto's require a button and those that do can be easily replaced by taking the screw out first.
